In an effort to continue to raise student achievement, Harnett County Schools is providing parents with the tools that build success, thus increasing parent participation and engagement with the school system. Parent University will assist in equipping parents with new and/or additional skills, knowledge, resources, support, and technology to better help their children. Listed below is the schedule and classes being offered:
K-2 Modeling Reading and Math Strategies -Facilitator – Tara Roy This session will focus on hands-on strategies for parents to use at home when working with their children. Parents will actively participate in various activities for both Mathematics and Reading.
3-5 Read to Achieve and Ways to Improve Reading - Facilitators: Camille House and Dana Stephens Read to Achieve outlines reading requirements for elementary students and describes what schools will be doing to assist children to become proficient readers. The information shared during this session will help parents understand the goal of the North Carolina Read to Achieve law and the importance of early intervention and support for students who are struggling with reading.
6-8 Helping Middle School Students Stay on C.O.U.R.S.E.! - Facilitator – Myra Holloway (Communication-Organization-Understanding-Reflection-Study Skills-Encouragement) Parents will gain an understanding of Common Core curriculum standards, the work and expectations that accompany the standards, and the resources that will help students and parents at home.
9-12 Helping Your Teen Become More College and Career Confident: – Facilitators – Allison Castle and Vera Jones Parents will be provided with resources to help guide their child and lead them down the path of planning for their future in this session by learning about career exploration and career development process. Studies show that parents/guardians have the greatest influence over their children’s educational and career choices.
AIG Technology in the Classroom – Facilitators – AIG Lead Teachers This session will provide parents with information on the utilization of technology in AIG classrooms. Utilization of appropriate technology within the classroom offers the perfect solution to individualized instruction. It is through this individualized instruction that gains in student achievement can be wrought for every student.
