Robert “Bobby” Taylor Wells
February 18, 1933 – November 19, 2013
Mr. Robert “Bobby” Taylor Wells, 80, died Tuesday evening at his home. He was born to the late Richard Taylor and Rosa Byrd Wells in Mecklenburg County, Virginia.
Bobby moved to Dunn in 1943 where he attended Dunn Schools and was a 1952 graduate of Dunn High School. He attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Campbell University, and East Carolina University where he received his Master’s Degree. His college career was interrupted from 1954-56 when he spent time in the US Army stationed in Europe during the Korean War.
Professional life for Bobby began in 1960 as a high school science teacher in Benson. In 1965, he went to work with the Harnett County Board of Education as Assistant Director of Federal Programs. Bobby started the Audio-Visual program and designed the familiar Harnett County Board of Education “Lamp of Knowledge” seal. He retired in 1993 after serving many years as Personnel Director for the Harnett County School System.
Bobby was a long time member of First Baptist Church of Dunn, a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, and a member of the American Legion Post 59 where he served a term as Post Commander. He volunteered time, woodworking talents, and WWII artifacts to the General William C. Lee Airborne Museum in Dunn. He was also a charter member of Dunn’s Wisdom Table at Sherry’s Bakery.
His hobbies included fishing, hunting, skeet shooting, carpentry and gardening. Bobby was blessed with six grandchildren and he considered the time spent with them precious and priceless.
A celebration of life service will be held 2:00 pm, Friday, November 22 at First Baptist Church of Dunn with Dr. Len Keever officiating. Burial will follow at Greenwood Cemetery.
Mr. Wells is survived by his wife, JoAnn B. Wells; two sons: Taylor Wells and wife Christine and Michael Wells and wife Sarah all of Dunn; and six grandchildren: Trey, Elizabeth, Rachel, Jacob, Thomas, and Paul Wells.
Family will receive friends from 6-8pm, Thursday, November 21 at Skinner & Smith Funeral Home.
