County Obtains $5.2 Million Judgment Against Former Employee
On May 9, 2014, Superior Court Judge Douglas Sasser issued a ruling in the case of County of Harnett v. Randy D. Rogers, in support of the County’s claims that former Harnett County employee Randy Rogers committed fraud, and unfair and deceptive trade practices against the County. In his ruling, Judge Sasser determined Rogers’ actions cost the County more than $1.7 million and ordered that he pay the County approximately $5.2 million. He also ordered that Rogers return all documents he obtained from the County during his employment with the County and warned that if he failed to comply with the order to return documents within 30 days, he may be found in contempt of Court, which is punishable by incarceration.
A motion by the defendant to continue the hearing was denied. Judge Sasser also dismissed Rogers’ counterclaim against the County in which he alleged that the County filed suit for an improper purpose.
Judge Sasser reserved judgment on the County’s motion that Rogers pay the County’s legal fees.
The County respects Judge Sasser’s decision and hopes the ruling will bring closure to this matter.
