Harnett County is among the top counties in the state when it comes to collecting property taxes owed.

During the 2012-13 fiscal year, Harnett County collected 98.85 percent of all property taxes owed, which was better than all but 11 of North Carolina’s 100 counties.

For the fiscal year ending June 30, 2014, the Harnett County Tax Department collected 99.12 percent of real property taxes excluding motor vehicles. The total collection rate with motor vehicles was 98.63 percent.

Harnett County Tax Administrator Keith Faulkner said he is proud of his department’s ranking as one of the top tax collectors in the state.

“I feel like our staff does a really good job,” he said. “We are constantly striving to improve, not only in collection percentage, but in the whole operation of our office. We’re always working on ways to better serve the public.”

Faulkner said the Harnett County Tax Office uses every method legally available to collect taxes owed.

“We try to use everything we can,” he said. “Obviously, we appreciate the taxpayers who are always very timely in making their payments.”

Based on the figures for the most recent fiscal year, Faulkner said he anticipates an even better ranking for 2013-14.

“We had a fairly significant increase in our collections this year, so I’m pretty pleased with that,” he said.

County Manager Tommy Burns applauded the Tax Department for ranking among the best in the state.

“Our employees pride themselves on providing good customer service,” he said. “This ranking is the result of the hard work and dedication they demonstrate every day.”

The county tax collection rankings were provided by Farragut in their June 2014 NC County Tax Advisory newsletter.
