BALTIMORE, MD – The National Association of Secretaries of State (NASS) held its annual summer conference in Baltimore, Maryland last week and inducted a new slate of national officers for the 2014-2015 cycle. Oregon Secretary of State Kate Brown will serve as president of the professional organization for state officials through July 2015, marking the first time in exactly fifty years that an Oregon official has held the position.
“I’m honored to serve as president of such a venerable organization as NASS,” said Brown. “The association has a long history of doing great work, and I look forward to collaborating with my fellow Secretaries of State on issues of mutual interest.”
During her remarks, Brown also noted that she will use her platform as NASS President to issue a call to action for state-based civic education and engagement initiatives, calling it a “natural fit” for Secretaries of State. She noted that a number of Secretaries of State offer strong programming in this area and share best practices through NASS.
Brown has served as Oregon’s Secretary of State since 2009. As a member of NASS, Brown has been involved in elections, civic education, voter participation, state heritage and business services issues. She has also served on the Executive Board in numerous capacities, most recently as president-elect for 2013-2014 and treasurer of NASS for the 2012-2013 cycle.
North Carolina Secretary of State Elaine F. Marshall was picked to lead the Southern Region of NASS as its new Vice-President.
Secretary Marshall has served on the Board of Directors previously. President Brown noted “We are glad to have Secretary Marshall back on the Board. She has led many of NASS’s significant business committees through the years and she has been instrumental in adapting government business functions to the changing technology environment.”
