Congratulations to the Harnett County Schools students who participated in the Upward Bound Math and Science (UBMS) program this year!! They were honored at a celebration on July 29, 2014 at the campus of NC Central which showcased students’ summer accomplishments.

HCS had 61 students (representing all four high schools) chosen to participate in the program for the 2013-2014 school year. UBMS is provided by Central Carolina Community College as a way to help strengthen the math and science skills of participating students. The goal of the program is to help students recognize and develop their potential to excel in math and science and to encourage them to pursue post secondary degrees in math and science, and ultimately careers in the math and science profession.

During the school year and summer, students participated in Saturday Sessions, including a writing workshop, career day, college fair, community service, and the UNC Science Expo. They also participated in two college Open Houses and a Robotics Tournament.

Twenty-four rising senior UBMS students participated in work-study summer internships in their local community in career fields of interest. Twenty rising juniors were able to do a 6-week summer program at CCCC and North Carolina Central University in Durham. Thirteen rising sophomores attended the Friday college tours, community service, and cultural enrichment.
