The Overhills High School Jaguars football
August 11, 2014
The Overhills High School Jaguars football team held its annual inter-squad scrimmage Thursday night on the 8th at OHS field in Spring Lake. Commonly referred to as the “Black and Blue” game, this was more than just another practice session; this was pre-season kick-off party for the entire Jaguar football family.
Jaguar players and coaches had established an obstacle course for player’s parents to run prior to the game. The OHS championship cheerleading squads performed for a sizable crowd consisting of several hundred friends and family members. The entire stadium was drowning in the magnificent smell of award winning Carolina BBQ courtesy of Mr. David Jones and his custom smoker.
The highlight of the evening was of course the scrimmage between two Jaguar squads comprised of both junior varsity and varsity players. Head Coach Rodney Barr and his staff were given an excellent opportunity to observe all the Jaguar players during a wide variety of game situations.
The Jaguars are looking forward to the upcoming football season with renewed purpose after a successful summer workout program that involved several successful 7-on-7 tournament appearances. Two of the larger tournaments this summer were held at North Carolina State University and at Wake Forest and in both contests the Overhills High School Jaguars claimed top honors as the State Champion football team in class 4A 7-on-7 football! The Jaguars also took home some individual honors in the special teams competition at Wake Forest: Nicco Maggi finished first overall in the punting and kicking challenge, William Wyland finished third in the kicking challenge, Anthony Lamberty finished third in the longsnap challenge, Kelvin Trotty was the third place finisher in the individual lineman challenge, and the Jaguar linemen came in third place for the linemen competition.
There is a fever running through Overhills right now and the only cure is more football! The next event for the Jaguars will be held at Overhills High School stadium, located at 2495 Ray Road, Spring Lake, NC, on August 15th starting at 4:00pm. The Overhills Football Fling is a celebration for the Jaguar family. There will be several demonstrations and information booths from community organizations, more of the great BBQ, and a series of football scrimmages beginning at 5:30 with a special scrimmage from the Spring Lake AAU little league football program. At 6:00 pm the Overhills Jaguars will host a scrimmage against the Wolverines of Westover in a two-game special matching the JV teams for the first game, followed by the varsity teams for the final game of the night.
