goodmanMr. Sherrill Taft Goodman, 78, of Dunn died Wednesday evening at his residence. He was born in Harnett County on August 5, 1935 to the late Cyrus and Emma J. Goodman.

Sherrill obtained an A.A. Degree in 1956 from Campbell College, an A.B. Degree in 1958 from Atlantic Christina College, a post graduate in 1961 from ECU and a Master’s Degree from NCSU, and in 1974 he received his Doctorate from NCSU.

In 1977 he went to work for Goodman and Associates in Dunn as a Consultant and in 1978 he went to work for North Carolina Department of Labor in Raleigh. He was a consultant with the State Department of Public Instruction in Raleigh for a number of years before retiring.

A funeral service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Hood Memorial Christian Church by Rev. Torrie Osgood. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Larue Goodman, a son, Scott Goodman, two daughters, Ashley G. Raynor and husband Billy, Lisa Bradham and husband Hugh, a brother, Jimmy Goodman and wife Gail all of Dunn, five grandchildren, Jenna Schnepel and husband Steve, Reid Whittington, Braxton Bradham, Beth Bradham and Jess Whittington.

The family will receive friends Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Skinner & Smith Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Harnett/Wake County, 111-A North Ellis Ave., Dunn, NC 28334 or to Hood Memorial Christian Church, 300 E. Cumberland St. Dunn, NC 28334.

Mrs. Ruby Inscore Pate, 91, of Dunn, formerly of Angier died Tuesday evening at her residence. She was born in Harnett County on May 4, 1922 to the late James W. and Daisy T. Inscore, and at the age of 6 she was raised by her aunt and uncle, Will and Flossie Taylor.

Ruby was a military wife, and she was the first government sponsored dependent to be sent to Panama. She was a member and officer of the Ft. Bragg Retired Officers Wives Association. She was also a member of the Angier Baptist Church, the Salem Methodist Church in Eastover, and the First Baptist Church in Dunn.

A funeral service will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church by Dr. Len Keever. Burial will follow in Lakeside Memorial Gardens in Angier.

She is survived by her husband of 72 years, David C. Pate of Dunn, three sons, Ronald D. Pate and wife Elisa of Atlanta, GA, John R. Pate and wife Phyllis of Maryville, TN, David C. Pate, II of Greenville, a daughter, Susan P. Funderburk of Charlotte, a sister, Frances Sherian of St. Petersburg, FL, seven grandchildren, Michael Farrior, II and wife Rachel, Alan D. Pate, Jon Pate, John B. Pate and wife Rachel, Julie Pate, Brian Pate and Nathan Pate, a great granddaughter, Brooke N. Farrior.

The family will receive friends Monday from 10 to 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church Parlor. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church, 309 W. Broad St. Dunn, NC 28334.

hodgesDunn, NC Mr. John Ellsworth Hodges, 73, of Dunn died Thursday morning at his home. He was born March 16, 1940 in Sampson County, son of the late Leonard Ellsworth and Eloise Dawson Hodges.

Mr. Hodges was a member of Bethesda Friends Meeting where he taught the Quaker Fellowship Sunday School class for many years. He was an avid fisherman and hunter and he enjoyed his family and friends tremendously. He was also a retired Volunteer Fireman with the Plainview Fire Department.

A funeral service will be held Saturday, November 2 at 3:00 P.M. at Bethesda Friends Meeting with Rev. Lee Lane and Rev. Ken Spivey officiating. Burial will follow in Sills Cemetery.

Mr. Hodges is survived by his wife, Linda Hodges, one son, Johnny Hodges and wife Leasa, one daughter, Debbie Summerlin and husband Ray, two sisters, Peggy Core and husband Dalma Lee and Gloria Carroll all of Dunn, and five grandchildren, Erin, Samantha, and Ashley Summerlin, and Rachel and John Hodges.

The Family will receive friends Friday from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. at Cromartie-Miller & Lee Funeral Home in Dunn and other times at the home.
